Exploring Pinterest

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the word “Pinterest”?

Is it “global marketing tool that can help promote and drive business to my site”?

If not, well… you’re not alone.

I remember when Pinterest first launched. I was in college and ecstatic to have something to occupy my time while sitting in my lecture classes. (Side note: most likely the reason I struggled through my entire Economics class.)

While Pinterest is useful for gathering my future wedding decorations and favorite low-calorie recipes, I’ve recently learned that it can be used for so much more.

I attended my second event hosted by the wonderful ladies of Exclusively Social. I had never put much thought into using Pinterest as anything other than a collection of my favorite things, but since I was in the middle of starting this blog, I thought I would check it out.

Turns out Pinterest can be a huge help with driving traffic to your business and websites. I listened carefully and took detailed notes so I could share with all of you!

Let’s explore Pinterest as a marketing tool:

  1. Convert your account (or start a new one) to a business account. This will help establish you as a legit business while giving you powerful insights (more on that later).
  2. Claim your domains – link up your Pinterest/FB/Etsy/etc. This helps link your original pins back to whatever website it came from. It also gives your account more legitimacy.
  3. Create pins on a weekly basis. Do not solely re-pin from other accounts. You need to pin your own content weekly.
  4. Get detailed in your descriptions. Use 1-2 sentences with key words.
  5. We all love to use them – #hashtags! Yes, even on Pinterest hashtags have power.
  6. Use the analytic tools provided by Pinterest. You can see what content your audience is responding the best to and tweak upcoming content to fit their interests. For example, if you notice your Fashion pins are driving a lot of traffic to your blog, perhaps you should pin 1-2 more outfit posts a week than usual. You can then reassess after looking at your new data.

I hope you found the above tips helpful and now see how Pinterest can be used as a powerful marketing tool. It’s been shown that Pinners who followed these steps have seen tremendous growth in traffic to their sites.
