My Skin Saving Secret

Let’s face it… Once we hit a certain age, our skin tends to go downhill. And if you’re sitting there saying “nope, not me” then you’re either extremely lucky with the gene pool or you just haven’t hit that age yet… sorry babes.

As we get older, our skin starts needing different things.

That age for me was 25. Now, I’m not sure if that’s average or early (please say average), but I started to really notice a change in my skin. The texture changed from smooth to a little rough and bumpy. I had more breakouts, whereas before I was really fortunate in this area. Looking back at old photos, I really didn’t understand how great my skin was! So youthful and glowing… the things we take for granted…

Now, I want to preface this by saying that I never had really bad skin. Yes, I would breakout, but I didn’t have anything too major. I know that I’m pretty lucky in those regards, but whether you have good skin or bad skin, when it does a 180, (for apparently no reason other than you’re getting older), you tend to freak out.

So once my skin started to go downhill, I went into panic mode. I tried a LOT of new products. I’d go on Instagram and see someone promoting a new, hip brand and I was sold. One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I’m the ideal customer for marketing. Cute packaging? SOLD. Promising a miracle cure? WHY NOT. It worked for her, it’ll work for me right? Wrong. So wrong.

It got to the point where I spent so much money on different products that I was broke and had even worse skin than before. It was a sad moment and not really the way I wanted to start my mid-20’s.

So I took a step back from it all. I realized that maybe I was doing too much, too quickly. I was caught up in trendy brand marketing and was desperate to achieve my ideal skin. I decided to take several months and strip my daily process down. I only used my daily cleanser (St. Ives) and moisturizer. I needed to get back to my skin before all of the fancy products.

After my skin evened out again, I decided to cautiously venture out. Although it was calmer, it still looked dull and a rough texture. It was nowhere close to the glowy, radiant skin I craved. So, I went into Nashville’s Lemon Laine while visiting a friend and had a discussion with one of their knowledgeable staff members. She pointed me to the natural brand Herbivore Botanicals.

This was another one of the trendy brands I had been seeing a lot about, so naturally I was skeptical. After asking a few more questions and discussing what I was ultimately looking for in a product, I decided to give it a try.

I picked up Herbivore’s Lapis oil, which is supposed to calm and balance the skin. I used 2-3 drops in my moisturizer every morning before I started doing my makeup. I used to have uneven, splotchy skin and would need foundation to cover it up. Before 25, I barely even used tinted moisturizer. After 2 months of using Herbivore’s Lapis oil, I didn’t need to wear much base makeup. My skin started to even out and most of the small blemishes went away. Now, it’s been more than 6 months and I feel like I have this natural glow! It really gives me the confidence to go makeup-less for most of the week. My morning routine has literally been cut in half. It’s a great feeling when you can feel confident in your skin again.

I’m not saying that this is the cure for everyone’s skin problems, but it certainly helped mine! I’ve ordered a few more items from Herbivore’s line and am eager to try them out. I’ll be sure to write a follow-up post on the line’s other products!

Please feel free to share any of your skin-saving products in the comments! It’s great to hear about what works for different skin types and issues.
